BUG 55 – Review

Adam Buxton BUG

Review of BUG 55

It has now been a decade since the first BUG show was held at the BFI Southbank in late April 2007. Hundreds of great music videos (and YouTube comments) later and Adam Buxton returned to the BFI for a new edition of BUG, sharing creative music videos and internet viral fun.

The guest for this edition was one of the greatest ever British music video directors – WIZ. WIZ has directed videos for some of the biggest bands and artists – including Oasis, Kasabian, Manic Street Preachers, Dizzee Rascal, Smashing Pumpkins and Kings of Leon. Buxton and WIZ talked about how WIZ documented the original ecstasy generation in Flowered Up’s “Weekender”, before speaking about the strange connection between the video for Chemical Brothers’ “Out of Control” and Pepsi’s recent (and shortly cancelled) advert with Kendall Jenner. The pair finished their conversation, by presenting WIZ’s more comical video for Kasabian’s “You’re in Love with a Psycho”.

In my view, the most memorable video shown from WIZ’s collection was a video focusing on the role of the Arctic Monkey’s drummer. Filmed in the centre of a council estate in East London, a drummer is placed at the centre of the estate where he practices despite clear pain. The music is clearly from the Arctic Monkeys, but we only hear the drums until near the very end. To me, the video demonstrated the drive, passion and love involved when learning and practicing an instrument.

The rest of the main programme included the return of Gorillaz, with Jamie Hewlett’s video for “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)“, a video all about the perilous existence of a wood mouse for alt-j’s “In Cold Blood” and the return of star music director Hiro Murai for the video for A Tribe Called Quest’s “Dis Generation” (among others).

My personal favourite videos for the night were simple but well delivered ideas. Firstly, I enjoyed the visual juxtapositions shown in Alexandre Courtes’ video for Cassius ft Pharrell Williams and Cat Power’s song “Go Up“. Courtes splits the screen in half and uses stock shots on either side, to create visually striking and thought-provoking images. The second video I really liked was Styler’s video for Bonobo’s song “Lambro Koyo Ganda“. This was the return, after a very long hiatus, for Swedish directing collective Stylewar who creates repeating patterns in what looks otherwise like stock footage and subtly adds small details of the video to fit with the music.
